International Dairy Federation
The International Dairy Federation (IDF) represents the global dairy sector and ensures the best scientific expertise is used to support high quality milk and nutritious, safe and sustainable dairy products.
IDF’s vision is to help nourish the world with safe and sustainable dairy. The growing world population needs nutritional security, and we must provide this both safely and sustainably. IDF provides a mechanism for the dairy sector to reach global consensus on how to help feed the world with safe and sustainable dairy products.
As the peak body for the global dairy sector, IDF has an important role to play in ensuring the right policies, standards, practices and regulations are in place to achieve this goal. In close cooperation with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), IDF has established a joint IDF/ISO work programme for the development of standard methods of analysis and sampling for milk and milk products.
IDF has also working relationships with several global intergovernmental organizations, and has a formal status with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme – Codex Alimentarius.

Food fraud is estimated to cost the UK food and drink industry up to £11 billion per year and also has the potential to be a major food safety issue. Food fraud covers a broad definition and can include dilution or substitution, adulteration, mislabelling, or misinterpretation or deliberate tampering.
As fraudsters are developing more sophisticated ways of adulterating food, analysts need to be able to identify whether the food is genuine. Modern analytical techniques are capable of identifying known contaminants at very low levels but the emphasis on this meeting will not be on identifying specific contaminants but on identifying whether the food is entirely what it says it is.
There are a plethora of techniques and methodologies used in food analysis from the robust and routine to the new, novel and developing. Techniques that can profile samples, whether portable or lab based, are being increasing employed and could prove invaluable tools in the fight against food fraud.
Confirmed speakers include;
Kate Kemsley from IFR, Sophie Rollinson from Defra Nick Byrd from Campden BRI,

http://isofood.eu/2016/10/exploratory-workshop-isotopic-techniques-in-food-characterisation/
Objectives
The exploratory workshop is dedicated to the exploration of new directions and emerging topics in the field of isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) and its application to food science. The aim is to bring together experts from various backgrounds including public research institutes, universities, and the private sector, but all devoted to the study of isotopic techniques for the or igin and authenticity characterization of food. The workshop is organized as a series of plenary lectures, oral and poster communications designed to create a platform for sharing of knowledge, experiences, good practices and cooperation among experts and aims to define the state-of-the-art in instrumentation, methodologies and applications in isotope ratio mass spectrometry in this field.
Objectives
The Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) and Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) are organising a training course on stable isotope metrology. New applications and new analytical technologies in stable isotope research have resulted in a change to the measurements and standards infrastructure needed to ensure data
Integrity. Making accurate and precise measurements of stable isotopes is challenging, since analytical methods cannot be properly validated given that lack of certified reference materials and/or reference methods. Uncertainty propagation in measurements, both for reference material characterization and for everyday
laboratory practice will be discussed. The training course aims to provide participants with the skills required to produce quality assured stable isotope ratio
data for environmental and food samples. Both theory and practice will be combined throughout the course to give participants the opportunity to put concepts learned into practice.

Ensuring food supply integrity is of the utmost importance in relation to food security, safety and
quality, consumer protection and international trade. Control measures throughout the entire food
production and supply chain are essential to mainta in and assure this integrity. The fundamental
purpose of the controls is to support food safety and quality, because both are essential and set the
foundation for food security and consumer protection as well as facilitating both domestic and
international trade.

The Elliot Report is providing food for thought with a series of recommendations for government agencies and industry. A fundamental requirement will be to protect the consumer from food crime. This will be achieved through improvements to intelligence gathering, monitoring the traceability of food ingredients and improved food fraud detection methods. In an associated development, the BRC’s new Global Standard for Food Safety, to be implemented in 2015, will require the industry to adopt practices to minimize the risk of use of fraudulent or adulterated raw materials.
This seminar will focus on the latest developments in food authentication, particularly with respect to seafood, spirits, and plants. It will give delegates an increased awareness of potential food fraud issues and the advanced technologies that are helping to protect the consumer

The week-long series of events on food authenticity marks the start of the €12M FoodIntegrity project. Funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme, and comprising 38 international partners from industry, academia and government institutes, FoodIntegrity will address many of the post-horsemeat issues at a European level. As well as carrying out research on new methods and systems for authenticating food and ingredients, the project will work with stakeholders to better understand consumer behaviour, develop horizon scanning tools and systems for data sharing. An international network of expertise on food authenticity will be established. It will identify gaps and commission €3M worth of research requirements within the project to address emerging issues.
