Land use and sustainability
Our mission is to provide science-based evaluation and advice on the impacts of changing pressures on the agricultural environment.
What we do
The Land Use and Sustainability team is focussed on evaluation of the environmental impacts of changes in land use in connection with changes in agricultural and environmental policy, driven by the need for sustainable food production, climate change adaptation, and protection of ecosystem services. In addition to the evaluation of agri-environment schemes and other programmes relating to the environmental sustainability of agriculture, the potential contribution and environmental impacts that genetic modification and non-food crops (in particular to derive energy) make to future land use scenarios are an integral part of the team's work. Our expertise in liaising with farmers and industry stakeholders and collating and utilising data gathered in these areas is also a critical part of our capability. The team will be delivering advice to farmers on environmental stewardship under the Farm advice, training and information (FATI) framework in collaboration with FWAG.
Our major customers include Defra, DECC, other Government departments and agencies, and the EU.
Agri-environment and land use strategy
Research, assessment, and appraisal of the agricultural and environmental impacts of land use policy in the UK, including agri-environment schemes, land use change, greenhouse gas emissions, and biomass energy.
GM risk assessment and regulation
Horizon scanning research, surveillance and assessment of potential risks and impacts associated with the release of genetically modified organisms. The team also provides the GM Inspectorate function for Defra and undertakes inspection and enforcement of the deliberate release of GMOs under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Expert surveys of pesticide usage in England and Wales, publication of accessible guidelines on pesticide use, and provision of accessible databases for industry.
