Plants brought back from abroad could carry serious pests and diseases

In order to safeguard plant health in Britain, there are statutory controls on importing plants and plant products (such as flowers and fruits) into this country. Small quantities of controlled plant material, i.e. those plants which are required to be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate on import, may be brought into Great Britain without certificates subject to certain conditions.

A joint HMCE/Defra publicity leaflet 'If in doubt, leave it out !' (pdf) is available which provides an overview of these concessions.

Remember - HM Customs and Excise will confiscate plants and plant produce which contravene the controls outlined above.
