Environmental Modelling Training Course

20 - 21 February 2012, Sand Hutton, York, North Yorkshire, UK

Following on from the popularity of the courses held in May and September 2011, The Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) will be holding another 2-day course on Environmental Modelling and Risk Assessment for Pesticides in February.

The course is aimed at anyone involved in assessing the environmental risk of pesticides who would like to learn more about the models that are used in the risk assessment procedures. The course is of particular interest to those who have very little previous experience using the FOCUS models. The course covers the following topics:

  • Chemical risk assessment procedures
  • Models used for regulatory compliance (FOCUS models)
  • Input data for regulatory modelling
  • Introduction to higher tier strategies

To reflect the change in regulations, the course has been updated, and will feature a mixture of theory and practical sessions to work with the models covering:

  • Groundwater leaching models PELMO and PEARL
  • Step 3 surface water assessment in SWASH (PRZM, MACRO and TOXSWA)
  • Parameter fitting in MODELMAKER

This course is lead by Dr Sabine Beulke and Dr Wendy van Beinum, who are experts in the area of exposure modelling. Over the years, they have both been involved in many aspects of environmental modelling including research and guidance development. Guest speakers at the course are Professor Colin Brown who is Head of the Environment Department at the University of York and member of the Advisory Committee on Pesticides, and James Hingston from the Chemicals Regulatory Directorate (CRD) in the UK.
