Sports and social
Fera employees (including students, contractors, visiting workers and partners) have access to a wide range of sports and leisure facilities, both within and outside Fera.
The local Sports and Social Committee organises a variety of events throughout the year (such as the summer BBQ and the famous Fera Pancake Race on Shrove Tuesday), as well as events to raise money for charity. In addition, there are various clubs based at the Sand Hutton site, such as the Fera crafters, 6-a-side football and the walking club, and there are regular trips to the theatre.
The Fera Sand Hutton site also has a very well equipped fitness centre, which is open to all Fera staff and partners, as well as contractors, students and visiting workers for a small membership fee. The building also houses changing and showering facilities for those who like to go for runs at lunchtimes, or cycle/bike to and from work. There are two annual sports days, one for the Northern Region Defra offices, and a nation-wide one. Top-performers may go on to represent Defra in the Civil Service-wide sports days.
Finally, being part of the Civil Service entitles you to become a member of the CSSC, the Civil Service Sports and Leisure club. The CSSC provides members with sports and leisure facilities outside of Fera, as well as various discounts in shops and restaurants and other services in and around York.
